Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes

Each module is designed to enhance your knowledge, skills and attitudes as related to The Sherman Chiropractor.

Knowledge
It is the vision of Sherman College, as set forth in The Sherman Chiropractor, that students will have the opportunity to develop excellent analysis and adjusting skills as they work toward mastery of the Sherman Package©. Additionally, this module supports the intellectual environment for advanced levels of achievement as the student learns to demonstrate:

• Identify and select appropriate neuromusculoskeletal examination tests and procedures consistent with the patient's complaint or presentation;
• Understand and select methods for evaluating posture, biomechanical function, and the presence of spinal or other articular subluxation or dysfunction;
• Correlate information obtained in the neuromusculoskeletal examination with the information obtained from patient's history and physical examination;
• Understand the mechanisms of neuromusculoskeletal tests and demonstrate an ability to recognize normal, variant and abnormal findings;
• Interpret and assess the clinical importance of significant normal and abnormal neuromusculoskeletal examination findings;
• Assess the reliability of data elicited in the neuromusculoskeletal examination through repetition and/or selection of confirmatory procedures.

Skills
It is important for The Sherman Chiropractor to attain mastery of their skills. This course will develop their abilities to:

• palpate specific anatomical landmarks associated with spinal segments and other articulations
• select and effectively utilize palpation and appropriate methods to identify subluxations of the spine and/or other articulations
• Conduct a neuromusculoskeletal examination using inspection, palpation, range of motion.
• Observe and record verbal and non-verbal diagnostic clues elicited and observed during the neuromusculoskeletal examination;
• Conduct a neuromusculoskeletal examination in a manner that provides for efficient patient positioning and comfort;
• Provide appropriate and understandable explanations and instructions to the patient prior to the use of procedures and instruments.

Attitudes
Personal and professional integrity, as well as professional excellence are attitudes set forth in The Sherman Chiropractor. These are demonstrated by a compassionate, professional, and ethical approach to people and their care. Palpation II endeavors to relate these competencies specifically in an advanced technique course, with the intended result that the student will be able to:

• formulate and employ an organized and effective methodology of performing the spinal exam
• appreciate the normal and abnormal structural and functional articular relationships
• be aware of the pathophysiology and methods of evaluating articular biomechanics
• Appreciate the effect that a patient's pain and discomfort may have on the doctor's ability to conduct a neuromusculoskeletal examination;
• Appreciate and adapt to patient apprehension in the performance of neuromusculoskeletal examination procedures;
• Appreciate the normal and abnormal structural and functional articular relationships of the spine.
• Consider the possibility that the origin of the patient’s symptoms may be from a source other than the neuromusculoskeletal system.
