Lytec Module Assignments

REFLECTIVE STATEMENT
Describe
: The Lytec module is a series of lectures and Lytec software-based assignments that I developed and currently utilize in teaching a course called Automated Office Procedures at Sherman College. The module exposes chiropractic students to the basic components of coding, billing, and filing insurance claims. Lytec is the practice management software that I use to teach the insurance and billing concepts. The pdf artifact contains selected module sections and written assignments that are used with the in-class demonstration using Lytec. This artifact also relates to my instructional design of a teaching goal artifact.

Analyze: I chose this artifact for my portfolio because it demonstrates my ability as an instructor to engage students in a problem-based atmosphere for conceptual learning. It fits my framework because it shows my judicious use of modern technology to facilitate the learning process. Use of this particular technology requires students to move beyond being passive receivers of information and into being active participants.

Appraise: The strength of this artifact is the use of technology, lecture, and coding scenarios within a hypothetical chiropractic office setting. Students become engaged in critical thinking in order to translate a doctor’s notes into coding language with appropriate documentation of services. The weakness of this artifact is that not every coding rule or scenario can be taught, as many are unique to specific types of health provider facilities. Instructing with this software while using real-world coding and billing scenarios is putting my educational philosophy into action by creating a problem-based environment in which students can practice critical thinking skills. Furthermore, this approach provides students with the confidence to transfer classroom knowledge to their practices in order to achieve success in the billing and collections aspect of operating a chiropractic practice.

Transform: Chiropractic coding is a niche in the insurance coding industry, so it is rewarding to be able to share my years of knowledge of chiropractic coding practices with future doctors of chiropractic. Teaching this module has forced me to stay current with the latest coding practices, rules and regulations. Over the years of teaching the Lytec module, I have gradually lengthened the assignments and plan to continue that trend by including more real-world coding scenarios. During the last several years, I have required more webquest assignments related to insurance and coding. This has allowed me to become more educated in the online resource availability of this field. A benefit to having taught this course for so many years is that I am extremely proficient in all versions and phases of this software. Plans to upgrade to the next version of the practice management software are scheduled for the next budget year. Just as previous upgrades have required, modifications will be made to the assignments to include the latest software enhancements from Lytec.
